High Street Presbyterian Church is an architectural gem located in a violent gang area bordering East Oakland.  The church was designed one hundred years ago by the famed architect of Hearst Castle, Julia Morgan.  In August the church was ready to refinish the floors in the Fellowship Hall one more time.  The volunteer artichect who is helping them maintain the artichecture of the building informed them that not only could the original douglas fir floors not be repaired and refinished, they had to be replaced, and quickly, as they are so thin and splintering they are now unsafe.

$20,000 is a huge amount to raise for this small multi-cultural, multi-generational urban church with 27 members who have very, very, low incomes and limited educations.   This congregation has a HUGE heart for their church and has raised the impressive sum of $9,000 for the new floors.  They now need others to come along side and help them raise the $11,000 still needed.

When Rev. Linda Gruel was assigned to High Street Presbyterian Church as a Designated Pastor two and one half years ago six people attended her first worship service.  Today 35 people are attending worship and the membership has gone from 15 to 27 people.   The neighborhood has not changed, but this warm welcoming little church is a beacon.  Rev. Gruel was recently installed as the 50% called pastor to the church.  This very violent gang infested neighborood, with a recent killing on the next block, has a growing church.  Praise God!
