Goal: Provide compassionate ministry for homeless people.
With an objective of providing compassionate ministry for homeless people, a number of Korean Presbyterian Churches, as well as those of other denominations, have provided leadership to serve meals to over 100 people weekly as well as at special events. One such example is the Thanksgiving dinner at which nearly 2000 meals are served to those in need in Oakland. One dimension of this ministry is to help a variety of local congregations get involved in compassionate justice issues. This has included start-up assistance for projects until they are self-sustaining. Close linkages with this group’s partner churches and organizations are fostered with prayer, sharing information and workshops. In 2007, 6000 homeless were served hot meals and 4000 participated in Thursday evening services before the meals. Convalescent home residents are visited, voter registration is facilitated and workshops are given to encourage civic engagement.
